High-strength wastewater treatment has long been a central challenge for the environmental services industry, and elevated mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations in particular tend to undermine system stability. When sludge concentration becomes too high, it can impair aeration efficiency and biological treatment capacity, while increasing the frequency of equipment fouling, maintenance interventions, and associated labor costs.


In this case, the client had been operating an ultrafiltration (UF) system for wastewater treatment, but sludge concentrations in the system reached 20,000 ppm — far exceeding the typical operating load of approximately 12,000 ppm for conventional membrane filtration equipment. Sustained high sludge concentrations led to frequent equipment disassembly and cleaning, increased labor burdens, and steadily rising operating costs.


In addition, policy changes in response to African swine fever (ASF) expanded the volume of wastewater requiring treatment. With costs and treatment demands rising in parallel, achieving both treatment effectiveness and operational efficiency became an urgent priority for the client.

Faced with system instability caused by high sludge concentrations, LCY did not default to simply scaling up equipment. Instead, the team first addressed the biological treatment process itself — systematically adjusting test parameters and operating conditions to establish a more efficient biological treatment regime.


The technical team improved biomass activity and adjusted the food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratio, resulting in improved performance across the existing biological system. Sludge concentration was reduced from over 20,000 ppm to below 8,000 ppm while maintaining effective pollutant removal capacity.


In addition, LCY's equipment can be configured to suit site-specific conditions, including adjustments to dimensions, operating mode, and system layout. Combined with multiple rounds of operator training and on-site technical support, the client progressively built a more complete operating workflow and stronger in-house management capability.
